SUMMARY:PaCT at 30: Transforming Communities Through Education
DESCRIPTION:As PaCT marks 30 years of transformative service to communities\, we recognize this milestone not only as a time for celebration but also as an opportunity to engage stakeholders to give back in a meaningful and lasting way. To honor this journey\, PaCT is launching a legacy initiative\, a project that reflects our unwavering commitment to education\, equity\, and sustainable development.\nThe proposed initiative focuses on constructing and equipping a classroom block at Sserunyonyi Primary School in Mityana District to enhance the learning environment for pupils in one of the region’s most disadvantaged rural communities. This aligns with PaCT’s enduring commitment to education\, equity\, and sustainable development.\n\nAbout Serunyonyi Primary School\nEstablished in 1978\, Sserunyonyi Primary School serves five villages\, Serunyonyi\, Kimuli\, Bujjayu\, Kyamanyooli\, and Kitego in Bujjayu Parish\, Kalangaalo Sub-County\, Mityana District. Originally built through the generosity of a local land donor and the surrounding community\, the school was later integrated into Uganda’s Universal Primary Education (UPE) program in 1988. However\, despite government oversight\, the school continues to face severe infrastructural challenges that significantly hinder the delivery of quality education.\n\nToday\, Sserunyonyi operates with just four usable classrooms to accommodate students across seven primary levels\, forcing many children to attend lessons under trees. Exposure to harsh weather conditions routinely disrupts classes\, particularly during the rainy season when students are either sent home or crowded into already overstretched indoor spaces. These unsafe and unpredictable learning environments have contributed to a school dropout rate of 25%\, with no alternative school within a manageable distance\, the nearest being over 10 kilometers away.\nCompounding these challenges\, the school also suffers from a lack of safe water\, inadequate sanitation facilities\, insufficient classroom furniture\, and overcrowded conditions\, all of which negatively affect attendance\, learning outcomes\, and student safety. Without urgent intervention\, these barriers will continue to deny children their right to a safe\, dignified\, and inclusive education.\nWith support from stakeholders\, development partners\, private sector and well-wishers\, there is a clear opportunity to transform Sserunyonyi Primary School into a safe and empowering learning environment. Investment in new classroom blocks\, improved sanitation\, and water facilities will not only protect children’s health and safety but also restore hope\, strengthen education outcomes\, and open pathways to a better future for hundreds of children in this underserved community.
